About Nicole
Nicole Carey, PhD is an innovative social scientist, organizational strategist, and executive leader of two impactful organizations: Indy Equity Collaborative, an independent research and strategy consulting firm; JUST Community Inc., a non-profit dedicated to culturally responsive health and wellness.
Nicole’s research expertise in equitable organizational leadership is informed by her deep engagement with the community. She skillfully applies design thinking and indigenous methodologies to create impactful strategies built from the genius our communities offer. In her role as a member of the Indianapolis Public School Board in District 5, Nicole leverages this expertise to champion educational excellence and equity, demonstrating a profound commitment to meaningful community involvement.
Balancing her professional endeavors, Nicole is also deeply devoted to her family, raising five young children with her partner, Chris. This personal experience enriches her understanding of the diverse needs and challenges within communities, further fueling her drive to create inclusive and equitable spaces.

Indy Equity Collaborative
Indy Equity Collaborative is a research and strategy consulting firm specializing in supporting organizations, communities, and educational institutions as they endeavor to become more diverse, equitable, and inclusive places of work, life, and impact. Founded and led by Dr. Nicole Carey, IEC leverages her 17 years of social science research and strategic expertise to foster organizational change and community engagement. As a Black woman-owned business, are deeply committed to promoting equity and inclusion across various sectors including community-based organizations, urban planning, healthcare, education, non-profit, and government. Services include strategic planning, community research, landscape analysis, organizational assessments, training/education, team building, design thinking workshops, executive leadership coaching and development.
JUST Community, Inc
Just Community, Inc., founded in 2023, is dedicated to addressing complex social problems through community-based initiatives. Our mission is to support holistic health and wellbeing in communities. Currently, we are focusing on Black maternal health, infant and toddler development, and family cohesion. The services and programs offered by JCI include funding prenatal, birth, and postpartum doula care, doula certification training, support for community doulas, continuing education and development for health care professionals, a toy exchange program for families with young children, and conducting research on the impact of holistic community based solutions to disparities in wellness.
Indianapolis Public Schools Board of Commissioners
Dr. Nicole Carey serves as an elected (2023-2026) board commissioner for Indianapolis Public Schools, where she brings her extensive expertise in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) to her role. As a dedicated advocate for equitable education, Dr. Carey has led innovative design thinking sessions that have resulted in the redesign of over a dozen policies, significantly enhancing community engagement and creating more inclusive environments within the district, including board meetings.
Dr. Carey’s board service is characterized by her strategic vision, her ability to build strong relationships within the community, and her relentless pursuit of excellence in education. She is passionate about collaborating with her fellow commissioners to set a strategic direction that not only addresses immediate challenges but also paves the way for long-term success and equity across the district.
